A novel approach for treating TB
Science News, August, 2024: Scientists have identified and produced a class of chemicals that can function in an innovative manner against tuberculosis causation. They explain that, in contrast to antibiotics already in use, the so-called callyaerins combat infectious diseases through a radically different method. The callyaerins target Rv2113, a particular membrane protein of M. tuberculosis that is not necessary for the bacteria to survive. This completely throws off the bacterium’s metabolism, which prevents it from growing. In contrast, callyaerins have no effect on human cells.
